Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

1.      Describe how telemedicine and remote care can enhance medical care for gender expansive patients across the lifespan.

2.      Identify ways to overcome barriers to telemedicine and virtual medicine including those specific to gender expansive patients.

3.      Access provider resources in telemedicine, remote care, and gender expansive medicine.

Description

Education on the unique needs of gender expansive patients is increasingly recognized in medical education; however, the populations remain underrepresented and experience disparities in access and outcomes. When gender diversity is understood by health care providers and patient’s communities across the lifespan, gender diverse patients have improved outcomes. Telemedicine and remote care provide patients access to culturally informed care even when that care is not geographically accessible. The presenters will explore the gender spectrum inclusive of but not limited to transgender and nonbinary persons. They will discuss how telemedicine/virtual medicine can enhance medical and surgical interventions that can help their gender expansive patients thrive. Complexity of intersecting minority status including race will be addressed.
